The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) was established in 1957 and is affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China. It is a national comprehensive agricultural research institution and it is always striving to provide solutions to a broad range of challenges in sustaining agricultural development through scientific innovation, technology transfer and education in agriculture. As the education arm of CAAS, the GSCAAS is a legal entity of higher education institution mainly focusing on graduate education. With an overall competitive edge in the disciplines of agriculture and life science, it has been ranked among China’s first-class graduate schools, and offers 54 Master’s and 50 Doctoral programs to domestic and international students. In 2024, GSCAAS officially passed the Higher General Education Re-accreditation for International Students in China. GSCAAS has cumulatively awarded more than 22000 doctoral degrees and master's degrees, which has made great contributions to Chinese agricultural development and economic construction.

Overview

The Graduate School of CAAS (GSCAAS) was founded in 1979. It is one of the earliest institutions approved to confer Master’s and Doctoral degrees in China. Based on 34 institutes which distributed in 17 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China, GSCAAS has established a successive multi-layer and multi-type education system that covers master’s and doctoral degrees, post-doctorate, international students, professional postgraduates and continuing education.


CAAS is responsible for conducting major fundamental and applied fundamental research, applied research, and high-tech development in agriculture, covering all aspects of agricultural research. CAAS operates 18 national key laboratories, two major national science and technology infrastructures, one national technology innovation center, the largest single-structure Biosafety Level 4 laboratory for large animals in the world, and the largest national crop germplasm bank housing the most extensive collection of native genetic resources in the world. CAAS has established robust collaborative partnerships with over 330 foreign scientific research and educational entities, as well as nearly 50 international organizations.

The programs in GSCAAS are related to four major academic categories of agriculture, natural sciences, engineering and management sciences, including 12 Ph.D. primary disciplines (biology, ecology, agricultural engineering, food science and engineering, crop science, horticulture, agricultural resource and environment science, plant protection, animal science, veterinary medicine, grassland science and agricultural and forestry economics & management) and 16 Master’s Degree primary disciplines. The GSCAAS currently holds 50 Ph.D. programs, 54 Master programs, and 5 Interdisciplinary programs. It has 19 academicians either from the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering Sciences. There are more than 2811 postgraduate supervisors including 1040 doctoral advisors. The total registered student number exceeds 7500 , of which doctoral students covers more than 35% of registered students.


The graduate school is open to applications from international students for autumn intake. It offers international students the Chinese Government Scholarship, Beijing Government Scholarship, the GSCAAS Scholarship and GSCAAS-Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Fellowship. The study of doctorate and master's programs generally lasts three years, and the medium of instruction is mostly English or Chinese and English bilingually. Currently, there are more than 323 international students  from 47 different countries across 4 continents at GSCAAS, 86.1% of whom are Ph.D. students. GSCAAS had conferred degrees to more than 1000 international graduates in total. Approved by the Ministry of Education, GSCAAS has carried out joint Ph.D. programs with the University of Liège in Belgium and Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and established cooperative relationships with more than 90 universities and scientific research institutions. The level of GSCAAS international cooperation and exchanges has been continuously improved.
