Digging bamboo shoots for cooking, traditional art painting: The third day of Wenzhou University’s “DongYOU Ji” summer camp’s “Enriching the Countryside” program at Guan’ao Residence continued with exciting activities!

On July 30th, the third day of the “DongYOU Ji” International Student Global Leadership Camp’s “Enriching Rural Areas” program at Guan’ao Di began. From the joy of harvesting fresh ingredients in the mountains to appreciating the beauty of intangible cultural heritage through egg painting, students from China and abroad experienced the gifts of nature while learning about intangible cultural traditions. They underwent a deep immersion, moving from “working experiences” to “cultural understanding”.

In the morning, the team ventured into the bamboo forests of Guan’ao Di Village, embarking on a journey to harvest bamboo shoots. Guan’ao Di Village is located in the heart of Pingyang, known as “the hometown of bamboo shoots in China”. Bamboo shoots are not only a gift from nature but also serve as a key asset for promoting rural revitalization. Under the guidance of the local experts, the international students moved through the bamboo groves, identifying bamboo shoots and carefully harvesting them. They experienced firsthand the joy of searching for and preparing bamboo shoots. Afterward, the team filled bamboo tubes with freshly harvested bamboo shoots and glutinous rice to make traditional bamboo tube rice. The aroma of bamboo and rice blended together as they cooked. The international students not only tasted the natural sweetness of the bamboo shoots but also gained an understanding of China’s ecological wisdom of living in harmony with nature.

In the afternoon, under the guidance of Mr. Wu Zhao Kui, an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of egg painting in Wenzhou, the team participated in a unique “intangible cultural heritage egg painting workshop”. Mr. Wu demonstrated the fascinating technique of painting on fragile eggshells. His precise line work and color application were truly breathtaking. With the teacher’s careful guidance, the team members picked up their brushes and skillfully painted on the tiny eggshells, blending traditional Chinese elements with their own cross-cultural perspectives. The fragile eggshells became a bridge between Chinese and foreign cultures. Through their brushstrokes, the team members truly appreciated the craftsmanship and artistic beauty of traditional Chinese micro-carving painting.
