Why did you choose to come to UCAS in the first place?

Luo: UCAS brings you as close to science as you can get. With its “research-education integration” approach and access to the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ advanced research facilities, we can attend talks by academicians and top scientists as early as our undergraduate years. We also get to step into labs and work with the latest technologies. The strong, dynamic academic atmosphere here is what really drew me in.

When did you first become interested in science or scientific research?

Luo: My interest in science really began to take shape during middle and high school, when I found myself drawn to math and the STEM subjects. That’s what led me to apply to UCAS and major in computer science. I realized that many of today’s most exciting technologies — from artificial intelligence to brain-computer interfaces — are rooted in computer science at their core. To me, this field holds tremendous potential for the future.

As a new UCAS student, what are you most looking forward to right now? Is there anything in particular you want to try here?

A3

Luo: I’m really looking forward to making the most of all the great resources here — especially attending lectures by leading researchers. Besides that, I’m also excited to explore the campus dining scene and try out the food at all of the five canteens. And if I get the chance, I’d love to give skiing a try — I’ve heard it’s popular around here.

What was your first impression of the UCAS campus when you arrived?

Niu: The Yanqi Lake Campus is very beautiful with well‑arranged buildings. I find the whole campus bright and airy — a truly refreshing environment. My fellow students are highly competent, and there is a strong research atmosphere across the campus.

Why did you choose to study at UCAS?

Niu: I believe that coming to UCAS will give me access to a broader range of research fields. The university offers comprehensive coverage of disciplines, with particularly strong resources in mathematics. At the same time, it facilitates easy communication and collaboration with other institutions and research institutes — which opens up greater opportunities for applied mathematics.

As a new UCAS student, what are you most looking forward to right now?

A3

Niu: My goals for the first year include publishing papers, achieving strong academic performance, and aiming for the Hua Luogeng Scholarship. I previously played for the Peking University Ultimate Frisbee Team and plan to represent UCAS in off‑campus competitions from my second year of PhD. Academically, I seek a deep mastery of mathematical system theory, while outside research I intend to maintain physical fitness and improve my overall lifestyle.

As a freshman representative who just finished delivering the opening speech, what three words can best summarize your inner feelings at this moment?

A1

Simon: The three words I would use are relieved, happy and excited. I was extremely nervous before the ceremony because I had to deliver the entire speech in Chinese, which was a big challenge for me. After I finished the speech smoothly, I felt really relieved. I am so happy to get this precious chance to stand on the stage and speak on behalf of all freshmen. Most importantly, I was very excited that my Chinese speech finally went perfectly as I hoped.

When did you first become interested in science or scientific research?What is your biggest overall feeling about studying and living at UCAS after enrolling?

A2

Simon: I think my strongest first impressions are about the natural environment here. At first, I was a little bit apprehensive that we would be living so far away from the city. But it turns out I haven’t really missed city life all that much. The nature surrounding the Yanqi Lake campus is beautiful. We also have fantastic sports facilities and good canteens. Honestly, I haven’t found myself missing anything at all here.

On top of that, the people around me are wonderful. All the teachers and staff are patient and helpful, and every classmate I have met is very kind and friendly. Since I came here, I have made many Chinese friends. They always take the initiative to help me adapt to the new study and life environment. I never feel lonely or unfamiliar here, and I have quickly integrated into the campus life.

As a freshman representative, what blessings do you want to send to all new students?

Simon: To students from the Sino-Danish College, I hope we can cherish our study experience, work hard on our majors and keep improving our Chinese. I hope that everyone will have a great time here, and I encourage everyone to step out of their own bubble and interact more with local Chinese students. They can teach us so much about local life and show us many interesting places. For all freshmen at UCAS, I wish you all can enjoy campus life and try all the delicious food here. I also hope local students and international students can reach out to one another, build friendships, and grow together throughout our time at university.

Before you arrived, what did you imagine studying at UCAS would be like?

A1

Altai: OK, I expected a very academically-demanding environment. I haven’t started classes yet, so I think I will find out more later. But I also imagined a really beautiful, large university. Of course, that includes its international side, with lots of international partners from all parts of the world. That was what I was imagining.

As we know, UCAS gives students access to research institutes and scientists across the Chinese Academy of Sciences. So what are you most excited to explore or become part of?

A2

Altai: OK, I’m really excited about being part of Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics and Technologies. I’m really excited because I know it’s a top‑tier institute for astronomical‑instrument technology. My master’s degree focuses on high angular resolution astronomy. So I feel very excited to be able to join an institute like this.

Today you officially become part of the UCAS community. What does this moment feel like for you? And is there a specific goal or dream that you hope your time at UCAS will bring you closer to?

A3

Altai: Well, honestly I feel a little bit surreal. I was not expecting such huge campuses and so many international students. I first got to the Zhongguancun campus in Beijing. And then today I came to the Yanqi lake campus. I realized this university is far bigger than I imagined. It’s great. And my goal is to pursue a PhD program. I hope I can keep working in astrophysics and astronomical instrumentation for as long as possible. I also hope I can bring some of the techniques and technologies I get access to here in China back to contribute to research in my home country.
