Renowned Egyptian Archaeologist Professor Zahi Hawass Awarded Honorary Doctorate by Shanghai International Studies University

On September 16, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) held a ceremony at its Songjiang Campus to confer an Honorary Doctorate upon Professor Zahi Hawass, the renowned Egyptian archaeologist. President Meng Zhongjie attended the ceremony, which was presided over by Vice President Wang Xin.
孟钟捷在致辞中指出，扎西·哈瓦斯教授是享誉全球的埃及考古学家和具有世界影响力的文明传播者，被誉为“现代埃及考古学之父”，为埃及学、埃及文物保护和考古事业发展作出了卓越贡献。哈瓦斯教授与学校深度合作中埃萨卡拉联合考古项目，并对上外学者团队策展“金字塔之巅——古埃及文明大展”给予重要指导与支持。他表示，中埃同为文明古国，两大文明源远流长、双向奔赴，是文明交流互鉴的典范。上海外国语大学发挥外语学科和区域国别研究优势，探索推进埃及学、艺术史、考古学等新领域研究实践，推动文化遗产数智化保护等研究范式创新，搭建全球南方学者人文交流平台，致力于开启立足上海的“浦江文明对话”。期待哈瓦斯教授继续关心和支持上外埃及学的发展，推动中埃高校、科研机构、文博机构深化务实交流合作，助力中埃文明交流互鉴行稳致远。
Meng Zhongjie noted in his address that Professor Zahi Hawass is a world-renowned Egyptian archaeologist and an influential advocate for the exchange of civilizations. Known as the “Father of Modern Egyptian Archaeology,” Professor Hawass has made outstanding contributions to Egyptology, the preservation of Egyptian cultural heritage, and the development of archaeology. Professor Hawass has worked closely with the university on the China-Egypt joint archaeological project in Saqqara and provided important guidance and support to the SISU academic team in curating At the Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt. He noted that China and Egypt are both ancient civilizations with long and rich histories, and that the exchanges between the two civilizations serve as a model of mutual learning and exchange. Leveraging its strengths in foreign languages and area studies, SISU is exploring research and practice in emerging fields such as Egyptology, art history, and archaeology, promoting innovative research approaches including the digital and intelligent preservation of cultural heritage, and building platforms for humanistic exchange among scholars from the Global South. The university is committed to launching the “Pujiang Dialogue on Civilizations,” based in Shanghai. He expressed the hope that Professor Hawass would continue to support the development of Egyptology at SISU, promote deeper practical exchanges and cooperation among Chinese and Egyptian universities, research institutions, and museums and cultural heritage organizations, and contribute to the sustained exchange and mutual learning between the civilizations of China and Egypt.
哈瓦斯教授对获授上海外国语大学名誉博士学位深感荣幸。身为埃及新吉萨大学文博学院院长、中埃联合考古项目核心负责人，他表示将持续深耕国际合作领域，牵头推动中埃联合考古重点项目落地落实、长效发展。他指出，中国考古团队长期扎根埃及考古一线，依托学术优势，打造考古研究特色品牌，积极探索科技考古等创新研究路径，不断拓展中埃考古研究的广度与深度。他将持续支持和参与中埃联合考古项目合作，依托上外优质智库平台，推进中埃考古领域专业人才联合培养与学术研究合作共享，为推动中埃文明交流互鉴贡献力量。
Professor Hawass expressed his great honor at receiving the Honorary Doctorate from Shanghai International Studies University. As Dean of the Faculty of Museums and Cultural Heritage at New Giza University in Egypt and a key leader of the China-Egypt joint archaeological project, he said that he would continue to deepen international cooperation and lead efforts to advance the implementation and long-term development of major China-Egypt joint archaeological projects. He noted that Chinese archaeological teams have long been working on the front lines of archaeological research in Egypt. Drawing on their academic strengths, they have developed distinctive research programs and actively explored innovative approaches such as scientific and technological archaeology, continuously expanding the breadth and depth of archaeological research between China and Egypt. He said he would continue to support and participate in cooperation on China-Egypt joint archaeological projects and, leveraging SISU’s high-quality think tank platforms, promote joint training of professional talent and the sharing of academic research in the field of China-Egypt archaeology, contributing to the exchange and mutual learning between the civilizations of China and Egypt.

Following the degree conferral ceremony, Dr. Hawass delivered an academic lecture titled Secrets of the Pharaohs: The Latest Discoveries in the Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings. Representatives of the university’s faculty and students, alumni, and leaders of partner enterprises and museums and cultural heritage institutions attended the event.
哈瓦斯教授曾长期担任埃及最高文物委员会秘书长，两度担任埃及文物部部长，推动了当代埃及有关文物与教育、规划与人才培养，追索流失文物，保护与修复重要文物遗址的许多新观念生成。他长期领导埃及博物馆体系的现代化建设，推动建立或修复开放包括大埃及博物馆等在内的一系列重要设施。他深耕埃及田野考古领域，主持了吉萨、萨卡拉等世界级遗址考古发掘工作，取得一系列具有全球影响力的重大考古发现。
Professor Hawass previously served for many years as Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities and twice as Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities. He promoted many new approaches to cultural heritage and education, planning and talent development, the recovery of lost antiquities, and the protection and restoration of important heritage sites in contemporary Egypt. He also played a leading role for many years in the modernization of Egypt’s museum system, promoting the establishment, restoration, and reopening of a number of major facilities, including the Grand Egyptian Museum. He has devoted himself to field archaeology in Egypt and led excavations at world-renowned archaeological sites such as Giza and Saqqara, making a series of major archaeological discoveries with global impact.
