Nanchang University's Summer Social Practice and Study Camp for International Students on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tiangong Culture Visits Zhangshu and Fengxin in Jiangxi Province

FromJuly 16th to 17th, 2026 , the "Experiencing China: Passing on the Torch of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Innovating with the Craftsmanship of Nature" —a study tour for Chinese and international students on traditional Chinese medicine and the culture of craftsmanship— was successfully held at Nanchang University. The event was sponsored by the China Scholarship Council and organized by the School of International Education of Nanchang University . More than 20 Chinese and international students from the School of International Education and the School of Food Science participated, including Chinese government scholarship students from 11 countries including Russia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Turkey, Morocco, Nigeria, Benin, and Ukraine .The students visited Zhangshu City, known as the "Capital of Chinese Medicine," and Fengxin County, the birthplace of the ancient Chinese medical text *Tiangong Kaiwu* (The Exploitation of the Works of Nature). Focusing on the two themes of the inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine and the contemporary transformation of ancient science and technology, the students engaged in a cultural dialogue and academic exploration spanning ancient and modern times through museum visits, pharmaceutical company experiences, visits to intangible cultural heritage streets, and research on green industries.

Tracing the origins of traditional Chinese medicine, one can appreciate the millennia-old craftsmanship that ensures "medicine is incomplete without Zhangshu."

The study tour's first stop was the China Medicine Capital Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum. Over 2,000 kinds of medicinal herb specimens impressed Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, an international student from Vietnam: "I didn't realize that the same herb can have different effects depending on its origin. No wonder they say 'Qi is the best medicine in the world'!" A demonstration of the Zhangbang "White Peony Flying to the Sky" processing technique changed the perspective of Qiu Yinong , a student from Russia: "I used to think that Chinese medicine was just about picking herbs and boiling them directly. I never imagined there were so many scientific principles behind the processing . " Along the way, the saying "Medicines are incomplete without Zhangshu, and ineffective without passing through Zhangshu" was no longer just a slogan on the wall, but a shared understanding among these young people from different cultural backgrounds—a Chinese-style perseverance, unassuming yet passed down through generations; unassuming yet supporting the city's millennia-old strength.

Fingertip preparation: experiencing the preservation and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine in intangible cultural heritage workshops.

At the intangible cultural heritage processing workshop of Tianqitang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Chinese and foreign students no longer viewed exhibits through glass, but truly stepped into the operational site of traditional Chinese medicine processing. Under the guidance of technicians, the students identified various Chinese medicinal materials one by one, and personally picked up traditional tools such as cleavers, slicing knives, and scrapers to learn the processes of cutting, grinding, and pill making. How thin should the white peony root be cut? To what fineness should the medicinal materials be ground in the grinding trough? Every step of the process has its intricacies, and every action requires repeated practice. In front of the grinding trough, several students took turns experiencing the process of the medicinal materials gradually being pulverized under the grinding wheel; in front of the pill making table, everyone gathered around the technicians to watch how the powdered medicinal materials were rolled into uniform pills, marveling at this precise and controllable traditional technique that did not rely on any modern machinery.

In the ancient-style alleyways of Zhangbang Traditional Chinese Medicine Street, several international students with medical backgrounds voluntarily entered the Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic and engaged in a special exchange with the practicing TCM doctors. The doctors took each student's pulse, explaining the different pulse patterns and their corresponding physical conditions, allowing them to intuitively understand how TCM interprets a person's health information from the pulse of their wrist. Tal, a medical student from Pakistan , inquired in detail about the principles and diagnostic logic of pulse diagnosis, remarking, " Western medicine relies on stethoscopes and laboratory tests, while TCM can perceive the body's Qi and blood with just three fingers. The underlying theoretical systems are completely different, but this holistic way of thinking has greatly inspired me. " The international students raised questions related to their respective countries' traditional medicine , creating a cross-border dialogue between TCM and Western medicine.

Inside the intangible cultural heritage exhibition hall, a wealth of historical materials and old objects systematically showcase the development of traditional Chinese medicine in Zhangshu over a thousand years. Chinese and international students also experienced moxibustion therapy firsthand. As the lit moxa stick hung above the acupoints, and the warmth slowly seeped in, Aslan, an international student from Turkey, said, "The feeling of it being warm and slowly penetrating is very special; it's different from any heat therapy I've experienced before." At that moment, traditional Chinese medicine was no longer an unfamiliar Eastern medicine, but a tangible, living culture.

The Creation of Nature: Exploring the Technological Wisdom of a 17th-Century Encyclopedia of Technology

The study tour visited the Song Yingxing Memorial Hall in Fengxin County . Guided by the docent, Chinese and international students systematically learned about Song Yingxing's life and achievements, including his travels to various places to investigate agricultural practices and his dedicated writings . Standing before various production diagrams depicting farming, bamboo and woodworking, textiles, and metallurgy, Liu Jiaqi, a student from China, exclaimed, " So many practical techniques are recorded here! Song Yingxing personally went to the fields to record agricultural activities; this spirit of empirical evidence deeply moved me. " The students gained a profound appreciation for the ingenuity of the ancients and realized that China, hundreds of years ago, already possessed such systematic technical records and scientific observations. This scientific spirit of respecting practice and being rooted in production still holds inspirational value today.

Green industries: Witnessing how traditional wisdom empowers modern development

The study tour also took place at Jiangxi Feiyu Bamboo Industry Group, where students gained a firsthand understanding of the local bamboo industry's green and circular economic development model. Guided by staff, the Chinese and international students visited a diverse product display showcasing bamboo-based panels, bamboo furniture, and other items , directly experiencing the advantages of modern bamboo industry's efficient resource utilization, low-carbon and environmentally friendly development, and circular sustainability. At Tiangong Nursery, the students explored various seedling exhibition areas, experiencing the new seedling industry model that integrates landscaping, cultural tourism, and e-commerce , and engaged in in-depth exchanges with staff on the characteristics and innovative paths of the seedling industry.

Discussions and sharing: voices from different countries

After the visit, the Chinese and international students were divided into four groups for discussions. Each group leader gave a presentation summarizing their group's learning outcomes, with other members actively contributing their insights. Students from medical backgrounds generally expressed that the biggest takeaway from the trip was experiencing firsthand the diagnostic process of traditional Chinese medicine , which involves " observation, auscultation, inquiry, and palpation ." From pulse diagnosis to moxibustion, from processing to prescription , they learned that traditional Chinese medicine is not just knowledge from books, but a complete and self-consistent practical system.

A medical student from Nepal said, In the past, my understanding of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was limited to acupuncture and herbal medicine, but this time I saw a complete theoretical framework and practical methods passed down through generations, which changed my perception. A student from China shared from the perspective of cultural inheritance: What touched me most was that many technicians have been working in the workshops for decades and are still teaching us very seriously—this isn’t a commercialized demonstration, it’s genuine inheritance. A student from Vietnam said, The empirical spirit of Song Yingxing back then is very similar to the focus of the workers today. Chinese people have always believed in the power of craftsmanship and practice . ’”

From the rich cultural heritage of traditional Chinese medicine in Zhangshu, to the technological wisdom of the Song Yingxing Memorial Hall, and the vibrant green industry of bamboo enterprises and Miao art workshops in Fengxin, the two-day study camp was both a cultural dialogue spanning ancient and modern times and an academic exploration for Chinese and international students. Through their travels, the students deepened their understanding of Chinese scientific civilization and traditional Chinese medicine culture—Chinese students interpreted the connection between traditional Chinese medicine and food science from a professional perspective, while international students focused on offering their observations and reflections from a cross-cultural standpoint. This practical model of Chinese and international youth traveling side-by-side is itself a vivid example of cultural exchange. In the future, the International Education College will continue to leverage the "Perceive China" brand to build more platforms for Chinese and international students to integrate theory and practice, telling China's story and conveying Chinese wisdom through diverse dialogues.
