Chongqing University is located in Chongqing, a city in western China. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, a high-level research-oriented comprehensive university under the national "211 Project" and "985 Project" key construction programs. It was selected into the list of national "World-Class Universities" (Class A) in 2017 and became a university under the second round of "Double First-Class" initiative in 2022.

Founded in 1929, Chongqing University now has 7 faculties (Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Information Science & Technology, Faculty of Architecture, and Faculty of Medicine), 35 schools, and 9 affiliated hospitals. The university has over 5,100 faculty and staff members, and more than 54,600 students in total,among whom over 28,000 are postgraduates and over 26,000 are undergraduates. The campuses occupy a total land area of over 5,300 mu (approximately 353 hectares), consisting of the Shapingba Area (including Campus A, Campus B, and Campus C), Ke Xue Cheng Area(including Huxi Campus, Zhigu Campus,etc.) and the National Elite Institute of Engineering.

Chongqing University has been approved as a university with the autonomous degree-granting authority. Currently, the University has 61 first-class undergraduate programs, 45 first-level discipline master's degree programs, 26 professional master's degree programs,38 first-level discipline doctoral degree programs, and 9 doctoral professional degree programs.

Disciplines such as Architecture, Engineering, Science, and Technology of Chongqing University rank among the top globally. Sixteen disciplines have been ranked in the top 1% of ESI global rankings, and four are in the top 1‰. Notably, the discipline of Engineering has been ranked in the ESI global top 1‱, marking the first such achievement in the southwest region. Additionally, ten disciplines have been ranked among the Top 50 in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, with three of them securing positions within the Top 10. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Civil Engineering have been elected as “Double First-class” disciplines in the second round assessment by the MOE.

Chongqing University has more than 3,200 full-time teachers,including nearly 300 national-level talents (among whom 9 are academicians), more than 1,100 doctoral supervisors, and more than 2,500 faculty members with professional titles at and above the deputy senior professional title.

Chongqing University vigorously advances its internationalization strategy. It has established stable and sound cooperative relations with over 300 universities and research institutions in more than 40 countries and regions. It also owns over 30 international cooperation platforms, such as the International Joint Research Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the International Joint Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, and the "111 Plan" Base for Introducing Talents in Disciplinary Innovation of Higher Education Institutions. Dedicated to the promotion of the Chinese culture, it has established Confucius Institute in Betong,Thailand, the Confucius Institute in Pisa, Italy, and Confucius Institute at La Trobe University, Australia.It has also been selected into the first batch of demonstration bases for international students education in China by the Ministry of Education, and is actively building the brand “Studying at Chongqing University” to advance the high-quality development of international student education.
