From June 15 to 18, the China–FAO South-South Cooperation Training Program on Sustainable Control of Transboundary Migratory Pests in Asia was held in Beijing. Nearly 20 leading plant protection experts from six countries, including Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, participated in the program, together with officials from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), professors from Chinese universities, researchers from scientific institutions and representatives from related enterprises.

The program noted that transboundary migratory pests, known for their strong mobility and potential for sudden outbreaks, pose a major threat to global food security and agricultural ecosystems. Migratory pests represented by the fall armyworm have already spread across many Asian countries, damaging crop production. Since such threats are not limited by national borders, sustainable pest management can only be achieved through deeper South-South cooperation and stronger regional joint prevention and control. Participants emphasized the need to use FAO’s South-South Cooperation platform and mechanisms to promote technological innovation and knowledge sharing in transboundary pest control.

With a focus on “enhancing practical capacity and promoting technology sharing,” the training program included four modules: lectures, case studies, field teaching and group discussions. More than 10 experts from Chinese agricultural research institutions, universities and related enterprises delivered systematic training on monitoring and early warning, integrated pest management (IPM), natural enemy breeding, biopesticide application, physical and chemical control, resistance management and smart plant protection. Advanced equipment, including 3D intelligent recognition glasses for plant diseases and pests, was also demonstrated on site.

During the training, participants discussed with lecturers and FAO officials how to carry out early identification and control of transboundary migratory pests based on the main crops and pest conditions in their own countries. They also expressed a strong interest in further cooperation. Many participants said they would bring back the monitoring layout methods, green control approaches, emergency response measures and advanced equipment introduced during the program, helping apply these technologies locally and contribute to regional food security. Participants also visited field demonstration bases around Beijing, where they observed intelligent spraying equipment, automated pest monitoring devices, radar monitoring systems, smart agriculture systems and digital management platforms.

Hosted by FAO and organized by the Institute of Plant Protection of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), the program was another important practice under the FAO-CAAS Innovation Platform and the South-South Cooperation framework. It not only strengthened participants’ practical skills, but also deepened mutual trust and collaboration between China and other Asian countries in the field of plant protection, laying a solid foundation for a more practical, efficient and inclusive regional cooperation mechanism.
